“Wrong” is a surreal comedy film from 2012 written and directed by French director Quentin Dupieux. The story revolves around the main protagonist Dolph Springer, who wakes up one morning to find that his beloved dog Paul has disappeared. From that moment on, Dolph embarks on an absurd journey to find his four-legged friend again.
The film is characterised by its bizarre and absurdly funny scenes that take the audience experience into a surreal world. One of the first strange scenes shows Dolph’s workplace, a building with reverse gravity, where all office furniture and people are hanging from the ceiling. This absurd scene sets the tone of the film from the start, allowing the audience to enter a world where nothing is as it seems.
As Dolph desperately searches for Paul, he encounters a series of bizarre characters with their own crazy problems. For example, he encounters a psychotic detective who claims he can manipulate time by turning it back on his wristwatch. Dolph also gets into a conversation with his neighbour who is planting a mountain of palm trees in his garden to prevent winter.
One of the most memorable and absurd scenes in the film is when Dolph meets with a mysterious guru called Master Chang. This guru has the ability to rob people of their understanding of their own reality. Master Chang holds Dolph captive and subjects him to a series of strange and pointless tasks to manipulate his perception. This scene clearly shows the absurd and lunatic ideas of the film.
In Wrong, everyday events and conventions are turned on their head and given a surreal and absurd twist. The film humorously explores the fragility of human perception and the search for meaning in a seemingly irrational world.
