“Grabbers” is a 2012 Irish horror comedy directed by Jon Wright. The film combines elements of the science fiction genre with a good dose of black humour and offers an entertaining film experience.
The plot takes place on the small Irish island of Erin Island. When strange creatures emerge from the sea and attack the locals, the inhabitants are faced with a mystery. They soon discover, however, that the creatures have a predilection for alcohol and that the blood alcohol concentration of the victims affects their attractiveness. To protect themselves, the residents develop the absurd idea of getting drunk and thus being uninteresting to the creatures. Accordingly, they try to keep their blood alcohol concentration as high as possible by drinking at the local pub.
Another crazy idea is that the residents give the bodies of the killed creatures electric shocks to find out if they are susceptible. They take the opportunity to put their scientific knowledge to the test and find out how to fight the creatures.
The film is notable for its witty dialogue and ironic portrayal of the islanders who have to deal with an unusual situation. The main characters are the grumpy policeman Ciarán O’Shea and the energetic policewoman Lisa Nolan, who try to protect the residents and unravel the mystery of the creatures. While fighting the monsters, they develop a romantic relationship, which leads to more amusing moments.
