“Hellyfish” is a whimsical film that tells an absurd story about an invasion of murderous jellyfish. The action takes place in an idyllic coastal town where the inhabitants are startled by unexplained deaths caused by mysterious jellyfish attacks.
From the beginning, the film takes on a humorously exaggerated and surreal atmosphere. One of the ludicrous ideas is that the jellyfish suddenly gain the ability to fly out of the water and thus pose an even greater danger. This makes for numerous absurd and amusing scenes in which the residents desperately try to protect themselves from the flying jellyfish. Some try to defend themselves with umbrellas, others with improvised anti-jellyfish helmets.
Another absurd twist is introduced when it is discovered that the jellyfish feed on human blood. This leads to the bizarre idea that the residents perform blood transfusions to attract the jellyfish and keep them away from the other residents. This leads to a series of abstruse scenes in which people dip their arms or fingers into tanks of jellyfish and engage in strange dialogue.
