“Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead” is a 2011 Japanese splatter film that presents itself as a horror comedy. The film was directed by Noboru Iguchi and is about a group of teenagers who are confronted with a bizarre and disgusting zombie apocalypse during a camping trip.
The film is characterised by its completely absurd and insane ideas, which can fascinate and shock the viewer in equal measure. One of the first insane ideas presented is the existence of zombie faeces. Yes, you read that right. The zombies in this film are not only infected through bites or scratches, but also through contact with contaminated human faeces. This far-fetched idea forms the basis for the entire plot of the film.
Another insane idea is that a mysterious, parasitic life form called “Ass Worm” infects humans and turns them into grotesque, demonic creatures. These Ass Worms are ingested by the characters not only through their mouths, but also through other orifices such as their noses and genitals. The absurd visual effects and the exaggerated portrayal of these worms provide a mixture of disgust and laughter.
The film also misses no opportunity to shamelessly play with common clichés and stereotypes. The characters are overdrawn and fulfil different roles: the naive protagonist, the nerdy boy, the sexy girl and the stupid macho man. However, these stereotypes are so exaggerated that they come across more as parody.
Besides the crazy ideas and the overdrawn characters, the film also offers an abundance of bloody and disgusting scenes. From exploding body parts to absurd fight scenes to obscene toilet scenarios – the film spares nothing to shock the audience and make them laugh at the same time.
